Textual Analysis of Music Video:
Notorious BIG- Sky Is The Limit
- The video opens with a tracking shot of a classy saloon sports car arriving to a plush mansion, so far the lyrics suggest that artist is speaking about his rags to riches story “ashes to classic”
- the genre characteristics are of a typical hip hop/rap video, the mis en scene includes the ideology of a glamorous celebrity lifestyle cars, women, press attention, designer clothes which support the artists idea of rising from the gutter to stardom.
- the mis en scene is quite typical in this genre and makes links onto black history in terms of people rising from harsh lifestyles to fame/fortune and freedom
- the relationship between the lyrics and the visuals seem to match very well because the visuals show the artist living a very plush lifestyle, enjoying his fame and popularity and the lyrics speak about what the artist had to do in life to get where he is today and to possibly inspire his audience to do the same thing, this is evident in one of the lyrics “sky is the limit, just know that you can have what you want be what you want, just keep on pressing on”
- a clever intertextual reference is made in this video, the directors whole cast for the video are all children referencing to the Hollywood production, Bugsy Malone,1976 (Alan Parker). I think that this is significant because it is my belief that on such a sensitive subject the young cast help portray innocence onto the artists story.
- Voyeuristic behaviour is featured in this video as the audience watch the artist tell his story and as he watches his own life around him
- this video in cooperates a fair balance of performance and narrative, and in some shots merges the two together which is a typical characteristic in hip hop, RnB and rap videos
